Media Consumption

In the last hundred years, the way people have consumed media has changed drastically due to advancements in technology and culture. Newspapers and magazines dominated the early 20th century but as radio became popular in the 1920s and 30s, people had instant access to news and entire shows which fundamentally changed media. Televisions entering households during the mid-20th century served as a great leap forward in providing stories in a visual format. Between the late 1990s and 2000s, the rise of the internet, blogs, and new online news services allowed for the great leap of media to be furthered. Early streaming services also gained popularity during this time. In the late 2000s, smartphones burst into the market. Now people had access to media anywhere and anytime. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok now enable everyone to interact with the content and make their own. With Social Media surpassing traditional media in reach and influence, users now consume media on the go. Alterations made from passive consumption where audiences would sit through the television or read articles, to more interactive participation with content through many devices and platforms.
