Different Film Openings By Different Genres

 

Various genres of films have distinctive opening techniques to establish the tone and get the audience interested. Action films tend to open with energetic scenes, such as "Mission: Impossible – Fallout" (2018), which opens with a suspenseful mission to capture viewers from the beginning. Horror films, in contrast, employ suspenseful or gruesome openings, like "Scream" (1996), in which a creepy phone call ends in a graphic murder, setting up fear and tension from the beginning.

Other genres emphasize character and mood. Comedies tend to present protagonists in embarrassing or comedic circumstances, such as "Superbad" (2007), which begins with a humorous exchange between friends. Sci-fi and fantasy movies depend on world-building, such as "Blade Runner" (1982), which begins with a foreboding text introduction and a dystopian cityscape. At the same time, romantic films can start off with a beguiling or contrasting meeting, such as "La La Land" (2016), which starts with a vibrant musical sequence hinting at the movie's themes.
